Creole Candied Yams

I really like this recipe because it is made without the addition of marshmellows. I think marshmellows are too sweet and ugly.


The addition of peaches is fantastic. During summer when peaches and other fruit are available please use the fresh peaches.

  • 1 can whole yams (30 ounces)
  • 0.25 cup(s) seedless rasins
  • juice from 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon(s) margarine
  • 1 apple, cored and sliced
  • 2 peaches, peeled and sliced
  • 0.5 cup(s) dark brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup(s) white sugar

Creole Candied Yams Directions

  1. Remove yams and place in casserole dish. Pour liquid from yams into bowl. Add white sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon, and mix until dissolved. Pour over yams.
  2. Mix fruit together; add to yams and liquid. Dot with margarine. Bake in 400 F. oven for about 45 min. or until syrup has thickened slightly and yams look glazed.
  3. Variation: Substitute oranges for peaches.
